How We Research
Every guide on New New Internet starts with one question: will this system give you a steady signal in the rooms you actually use? A one-story ranch and a three-floor house with plaster walls need very different setups.
Here is how we answer it.
1. We start with your home and your internet
We ask how big your home is, how many floors it has, what the walls are made of and where your modem sits. We also ask what internet you pay for, since a fiber plan and a basic cable plan call for different gear.
We treat the coverage number on the box as a starting point, not a promise. Makers measure it in open space, and real walls cut it down.
2. We compare specs and features
For each system, we look at the WiFi generation, the number of bands, the wired ports and their speeds, the coverage claim, the pack size and whether the units can link by cable. We also look at the app, parental controls and which features need a paid plan.
Makers describe their products in their own words, so we name the brand for every claim. We also note the warranty terms the maker lists.
3. We look at owner feedback
We read what owners report after weeks and months of use. We look for patterns, like units that drop off the network, slow speeds on the far node, a confusing app or trouble with a certain internet provider.
One unhappy owner doesn't sink a product. A repeated pattern does.
4. We score each product
Our score weighs specs, features and owner feedback against what you're shopping for. A system that's a strong pick for a small home may score lower in a guide for a large one.
Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.
5. We keep pages current
Mesh systems change fast, and model names change with them. Many listings also cover several pack sizes, so we check each model and only link to new units.
We skip any product with a known recall. When we change a guide in a real way, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.
What our picks are not
Our picks are research, not hands-on trials. We don't claim to have set up every system we cover.
Your speeds depend on your plan, your home and your devices. Follow the maker's setup steps, and check with your internet provider about what equipment works on your line.
